Why Cotton Is Still the Best Material for Bed Sheets
Cotton's share of the global fibre market has dropped from 60% in the 1960s to around 22% today. Synthetics like polyester, microfibre, and their various derivatives, have taken most of that ground. They're cheaper to produce, more wrinkle-resistant, and technically versatile. The bedding industry, like most of the textile world, has followed the economics.
And yet cotton remains the material of choice for anyone who's thought seriously about what they're sleeping on. There's a reason for that, and it isn't tradition or sentiment.
It breathes.
Cotton is a cellulose-based natural fibre. It absorbs moisture - it's capable of holding up to 27 times its own weight in water - and releases it back into the air, which is how it regulates temperature through the night. You warm up, the fibre wicks moisture away from your skin and releases it. You cool down, it retains enough warmth to stay comfortable.
Polyester doesn't do this. Polyester, including microfibre, is plastic - literally a synthetic polymer derived from petroleum - and it doesn't absorb moisture in the same way. It traps heat and sits against skin differently.
Synthetic sheets are sometimes marketed as "cooling" or "breathable" - but not in the same way as cotton. The key difference between cotton and polyester isn't really about air permeability, which is more a function of weave construction than fibre type. A loosely woven polyester fabric can be more air-permeable than a tightly woven cotton one. The biggest distinction is how each fibre handles moisture.
Cotton has what is termed 'high moisture regain' - it absorbs water vapour directly into the fibre itself, which is what drives its temperature-regulating properties. Polyester has very low moisture regain. It doesn't absorb moisture into the fibre; instead, engineered microfibre constructions can move liquid moisture across the surface through capillary action. This is the wicking technology used in athletic clothing. That works well when you're exercising and generating heat rapidly. For sleeping - where you need sustained comfort over eight hours, your body temperature is meant to drop slightly, and you're generating moisture gradually rather than intensely - cotton's absorption-based regulation tends to produce better comfort.
This is why quality hotels use cotton. Higher-end hospitality - the sector that washes sheets hundreds of times, buys in enormous volumes, and has strong financial incentives to use what works - still predominantly uses cotton percale when comfort matters. And it's because breathability, durability, and launderability at scale are hard to match any other way. If it holds up under that kind of use, it holds up in your bed.
It improves with use.
Most materials degrade with washing. Cotton percale, made from good long-staple fibre, does something different: it softens. The fibres relax with each wash cycle, the weave loosens slightly, and the sheet becomes more comfortable over time - while still holding its structural integrity. Customers who've had their sheets for several years consistently describe them as softer and better than when new, yet retaining that characteristic percale crispness.
Synthetics tend to go the other way. Polyester often pills, loses its surface texture, and develops that characteristic worn-plastic feel. Unlike cotton, it doesn't improve.
It's durable.
Cotton is well suited to something that gets slept on every night and washed over and over again. It's a strong fibre, and unlike many fibres, it becomes stronger when wet - useful for a fabric that spends a lot of its life going through a washing machine.
That doesn't mean all cotton sheets are equally durable. Fibre length, yarn quality, fabric weight, weave and finishing all matter. A very lightweight sheet made from short-staple cotton is a different proposition from a substantial percale woven from long-staple fibre. But good cotton bedding can withstand years of regular washing while becoming softer rather than simply looking more worn.
It's biodegradable.
At the end of its life, a cotton sheet breaks down. It's a natural cellulose fibre - it gets processed by soil microbes. A polyester sheet does not break down. It fragments into microplastics and persists in the environment for a very long time. Research has consistently shown that synthetic textiles are one of the primary sources of microplastic pollution in waterways, with each wash releasing hundreds of thousands of plastic fibres contributing to microplastic pollution in our waterways.
This is simply a fact borne out of what the fibre is made of. Whether organic or conventionally grown, cotton is going to naturally biodegrade, polyester is not. If you're thinking about what ends up in landfill and waterways at the end of a product's life, this is worth keeping in mind.
And then there's how it feels.
This one is personal.
I didn't think I had strong feelings about sheets. Many people claim they don't, after all - you're asleep while you use them, what difference does it make, right?
But then we went away. And there, in that hotel, lying there that first night, I realised I'd been wrong about not having strong feelings. I absolutely have strong feelings. The difference was immediate and unmistakable - that slightly plasticky, slightly hot, slightly wrong feeling that polycotton or straight polyester gives you that cotton just doesn't.
I personally love percale (that's why we sell it) - but I'd probably enjoy sateen sheets, as long as they were 100% cotton. Not as much as percale, but comfortably. What I wouldn't go back to willingly is a synthetic blend. Not now that I know what the alternative feels like.
That's the part that's hard to put in a spec sheet. Cotton just feels right. It always has.
On organic cotton.
GOTS-certified organic cotton is grown without the synthetic pesticides and fertilisers used in conventional cotton farming. GOTS certification then adds requirements for textile processing, including chemical inputs, environmental management and social criteria throughout certified stages of production. On water: cotton is often criticised for high water use. Cotton's water use varies enormously depending on where and how it's grown. In Maharashtra - one of India's major cotton-growing regions - approximately 97% of cotton cultivation is rain-fed, relying on seasonal monsoon rainfall rather than irrigation. The water footprint of cotton varies enormously by where and how it's grown, and rain-fed cultivation is significantly less water-intensive than irrigated. Whether that applies to any specific supply chain depends on origin, which is one reason supply chain transparency matters.
It's easy to care for.
Cotton sheets can be washed at home, in any machine, on a standard cycle. They dry well on a line or in a tumble dryer. They don't require special detergent, delicate cycles, or super particular storage conditions. They get softer with washing rather than worse.
Some of the newer technical fabrics - Tencel, bamboo-derived viscose, various microfibre blends - have more demanding care requirements, and don't always perform as claimed once washed repeatedly. Cotton's launderability is one of the less glamorous reasons it's remained dominant in bedding for centuries, but it's a real and practical one.
What about linen?
Since you asked - linen deserves a mention. It shares most of cotton's functional advantages - it breathes well, absorbs moisture, is biodegradable, and improves significantly with washing and age. In some respects it outperforms cotton: linen is exceptionally durable and can last decades with proper care. It's also made from flax, which requires less water and fewer pesticides than conventional cotton.
The catch is how it feels. Linen has a texture that divides people - it's coarser, scratchier, and less smooth than cotton, particularly when new. It softens with time but never becomes as smooth as a well-washed cotton percale. There's a reason most linen bedding brands today advertise their sheets as stonewashed - they're trying to reduce that wearing-in period, albeit at the cost of longevity. And it costs more - often significantly more for quality linen - which is harder to justify unless you particularly like the feel.
If you love the texture of linen, it's a genuinely good choice for bedding. If you're indifferent or don't particularly like it, cotton does most of the same things for less money and with a feel that most people find more immediately comfortable. Both are a long way from polyester.
The long view
Cotton has been used for bed linen for thousands of years. That matters because longevity in a functional product usually means it works. The question worth asking isn't why cotton has lasted, but why it continues to be chosen over technically sophisticated alternatives that are cheaper to produce and easier to manufacture at scale.
The answer is that it's comfortable, breathable, durable, biodegradable, and easy to care for. Other fabrics have to trade one or more of those properties to gain something else - lower cost, less wrinkling, a particular feel. For most people sleeping in most climates, none of those trade-offs are worth making.
Cotton isn't the default because nobody's thought of anything better. It's the default because nothing actually is better for most people in most beds.
